What iS Different Packet and Frame and Size

Mtu IP and Frame Size

I am a little bit confused about one fact. According to the specification, the ethernet frame maximum size is 1518 bytes, and the IPv4 packet size Length field in an IPv4 header can be up to 65535 bytes.

So my question is: how is it possible to have an IP packet maximum length larger than an ethernet frame, as everyone knows IPv4 packets encapsulated into ethernet frames

IP allocation PA PI Sub-allocation In ripe

Please be aware that ALLOCATED PI used to exists in the past but it is not existing anymore in the RIPE database.

  • ALLOCATED PA: This address space has been allocated to an Local Internet Registry (LIR) and no assignments or sub-allocations made from it are portable. Assignments and sub-allocations cannot be kept when moving to another provider.
  • ALLOCATED UNSPECIFIED: This address space has been allocated to the RIPE NCC or other RIRs for further distribution. If the address space is administered by the RIPE NCC, more specific objects with other values may exist.
  • SUB-ALLOCATED PA: This address space has been sub-allocated by an LIR to a downstream network operator that will make assignments from it. All assignments made from it are PA. They cannot be kept when moving to a service provided by another provider.
  • ASSIGNED PA: This address space has been assigned to the issuing LIR infrastructure or an End User for use with services provided by the issuing LIR. It cannot be kept when terminating services provided by the LIR.
  • ASSIGNED PI: This address space has been assigned to an End User for a specific purpose. It cannot be used to make further assignments to other parties.

Multi-Link Point to Point Protocol MLPPP By Mikrotik

Typically size of the packet sent over PPP link is reduced due to overhead. MP can be used to transmit and receive full frame over single ppp link. To make it work the Multilink Protocol uses additional LCP configuration options Multilink Maximum Received Reconstructed Unit (MRRU)

To enable Multi-link PPP over single link you must specify MRRU (Maximum Receive Reconstructed Unit) option. If both sides support this feature there are no need for MSS adjustment (in firewall mangle). Study shows that MRRU is less CPU expensive that 2 mangle rules per client. MRRU allows to divide packet to multiple channels therefore increasing possible MTU and MRU (up to 65535 bytes)

Under Windows it can be enabled in Networking tag, Settings button, “Negotiate multi-link for single link connections”. Their MRRU is hard coded to 1614.
